JOB SUMMARY
Provides technical expertise in the accurate and safe delivery of radiation therapy treatments to patients as prescribed by the Radiation Oncologist. Ensures high standards of patient care, precision treatment, and equipment operation while supporting departmental efficiency and compliance with institutional protocols.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Accurately and efficiently operates treatment machines to deliver prescribed radiation therapy doses. Rotates among all therapy machines and CT simulator, performing all assigned or
prescribed procedures with precision and efficiency.
Generates electronic treatment charts (e-charts) based on physician prescriptions and computerized treatment plans. Reads, interprets, and implements complex treatment directives.
Maintains accurate written and electronic documentation of daily treatments, charges, and other required patient care data.
Ensures adherence to radiation safety protocols to protect patients, staff, and self during all treatment procedures.
Demonstrates a thorough understanding of radiation therapy techniques, treatment rationale, and their clinical applications.
Integrates clinical instructions from medical and physics staff to ensure accurate dose delivery, correct field placement, and appropriate use of beam-altering devices.
Evaluates and monitors treatment machine performance; assists in equipment commissioning, calibration, quality assurance procedures, and physical measurements to ensure system accuracy.
Prepares patients for radiation therapy procedures, provides education about treatment expectations, and monitors patients during therapy sessions for safety and comfort.
Communicates effectively and professionally with the healthcare team, patients, and families, utilizing strong verbal and written communication skills.
Monitors patients clinical responses to treatment; appropriately withholds treatment when necessary and refers to medical or nursing staff for timely intervention.
Assists in the clinical training, supervision, and evaluation of radiation therapy students.
Adheres to internal quality control standards, departmental protocols, and institutional policies established by UTMB and regulatory bodies.
Maintains current and valid licensure and certifications as required by UTMB, state regulations, and accrediting organizations.
Ensures the department maintains a clean, organized, and professional appearance.
Participates in a yearly performance benchmark.
Marginal or Periodic Functions:
Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.
Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
Knowledgeable in the areas of anatomy, physiology, clinical oncology, radiobiology, radiation physics, and radiation safety.
Expertise in the technical aspects of radiation oncology.
Possess effective communication and interpersonal skills to facilitate the exchange of information with the radiation oncology treatment team as well as outside entities.
Demonstrate high level critical thinking and problem-solving skills, to include the ability to make quick evaluations and decisions.
Ability to work independently, but in collaboration with the other members of the clinical and treatment teams
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Minimum Qualifications:
Graduate of an American Medical Association accredited program in Radiation Therapy.
Preferred Qualifications:
At least 1 year of related experience
Experience with Varian equipment
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS OR CERTIFICATIONS
Required:
Certification in Radiation Therapy Technology by the American Registry of Radiation Therapy Technology.
Licensed by the Texas Medical Board in Medical Radiologic Technology
BLS certification through American Heart Association
Preferred:
Certification in Computed Tomography
