Role Summary
The MRI Technologist I works independently to perform routine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) procedures. This role provides direct assistance to physicians during diagnostic and specialized MRI procedures while delivering high-quality patient care. The technologist adheres to established MRI standards, safety protocols, and regulatory guidelines to ensure optimal patient safety, image quality, and customer service.
Essential Responsibilities
- Perform routine MRI and MRA examinations in accordance with established protocols and safety standards.
- Assist physicians during diagnostic and special MRI procedures, including adherence to sterile technique.
- Optimize imaging protocols to enhance image quality, patient safety, and overall patient experience.
- Communicate effectively with patients and family members using age-appropriate, compassionate, and professional language.
- Apply MRI safety policies and procedures consistently.
- Perform weekly quality control (QC) checks to ensure imaging equipment is functioning safely and properly.
- Monitor patient condition and reactions; apply critical thinking to identify concerns and escalate appropriately.
- Accurately document procedures and enter charges at the time services are rendered.
- Collaborate with members of the patient care team to support department goals and a positive work environment.
- Participate in departmental projects, shared governance activities, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Support patient safety efforts by reporting near misses and safety events through approved reporting systems.
- Use supplies and resources efficiently.
- Maintain accurate timekeeping records and approve timecards promptly.
- Seek ongoing professional development beyond baseline competencies.
Qualifications (Required)
- Completion of an accredited MRI training program.
- Minimum of 1 year of MRI experience.
- MRI certification or registry-eligible at time of hire.
- Ability to obtain MRI certification through ARRT or an equivalent certifying body (e.g., ARMRIT) within six months if registry-eligible.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English sufficient to ensure patient and workplace safety.
- Basic computer proficiency, including use of electronic health records, radiology information systems, PACS, and office software.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to function effectively as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities with minimal supervision.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience assisting with advanced or specialized MRI procedures.
- Demonstrated involvement in quality improvement, LEAN initiatives, or shared governance activities.
- Experience working with MRI equipment from multiple vendors.
- Strong customer service orientation with experience in patient-centered care environments.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
- Regular exposure to communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, radiation, hazardous medications, and occasionally combative or disoriented patients.
- Ability to push or pull up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to walk long distances and stand or sit continuously for up to 60 minutes at a time.
- Regular use of MRI scanners, contrast injectors, electronic health record systems, and PACS.
