Senior Radiation Therapist

Compensation: $120,000 per year
Employment Type: Full-Time
On-Call: Required on a rotating basis
Travel: Limited travel within the Houston Southeast region as needed




Job Summary

Provides advanced technical expertise in the accurate and safe delivery of radiation therapy treatments in accordance with physician prescriptions and established clinical protocols. Utilizes complex radiation therapy equipment and imaging systems to ensure precise treatment delivery while maintaining a strong focus on patient care, safety, and comfort. Collaborates closely with physicians, medical physicists, dosimetrists, and other healthcare professionals to support high-quality clinical outcomes and efficient departmental operations.




Essential Responsibilities

Operates radiation therapy treatment machines and CT simulators to deliver prescribed radiation doses accurately and efficiently, rotates across all therapy machines and simulators while adhering to established protocols, provides guidance and mentorship to staff therapists as directed by clinical leadership, generates and maintains electronic treatment charts using physician prescriptions and computerized treatment plans, interprets and implements complex radiation therapy plans, ensures strict compliance with radiation safety protocols to protect patients and staff, maintains accurate written and electronic records of treatments and patient care activities, coordinates patient scheduling and manages patient records to support workflow efficiency, synthesizes clinical and technical information from medical and physics teams to ensure accurate dose delivery and field setup, evaluates and monitors performance of treatment machines and assists with commissioning, calibration, quality assurance, and physical measurements, educates and prepares patients for radiation therapy while monitoring patient condition during treatment sessions, communicates effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members, monitors patient clinical progress and withholds treatment when appropriate while coordinating medical or nursing intervention, assists in the clinical training and evaluation of student therapists, adheres to institutional policies, regulatory standards, and quality control measures, participates in the development and refinement of departmental policies and procedures, represents the department in meetings when delegated by leadership, coordinates workflow and patient throughput in the treatment area, maintains a clean and professional treatment environment, participates in annual performance benchmarking.




Marginal or Periodic Duties

Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure, performs additional related duties as assigned.




Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, clinical oncology, radiobiology, radiation physics, and radiation safety, advanced technical expertise in radiation oncology operations, excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with clinical teams, demonstrated leadership and mentorship capability.




Education and Experience

Minimum Qualifications
Associate degree in a science-related field or graduate of an AMA-accredited Radiation Therapy Technology program, five years of progressive experience as a staff radiation therapist.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with Varian radiation therapy equipment.




Licenses and Certifications

Required
American Registry of Radiologic Technologists certification in Radiation Therapy, Texas Medical Board license in Medical Radiologic Technology, Basic Life Support certification through the American Heart Association.

Preferred
Computed Tomography certification.




Working Environment

May be exposed to communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, hazardous medications, and disoriented or combative patients.




On-Call Requirement

Participation in a rotating on-call schedule and availability during emergencies such as disasters or severe weather events impacting operational locations.
